Benchmarked and Rigorous Academic Standards
El Rabwa Network is committed to the use of benchmarked and rigorous academic standards, that set high expectations for student learning, and prepares students for college and career goals. Each year, EL Rabwa Network implements a K-12 curriculum based on adopted academic standards. Academic standards define not only what to learn by the end of the school year, but also how that learning progresses from year to year. Curriculum is a detailed daily plan that contains a number of important elements including learning activities, assessments, and resources used to ensure students are learning the established standards.
Curriculum is monitored locally, with teachers and administrative teams providing guidance and leadership around the curriculum implementation process. This means that the EL Rabwa Network determines the instructional methods, assessments, and resources that will be used in each and every school.
Progress towards mastery of these standards is assessed and reported on frequently. All stakeholders are involved in ongoing communication of student achievement to maximize academic and social growth. Effort and behavior are also assessed throughout each student’s learning experiences. Students are encouraged to set goals toward the intended learning targets.
Assessments, both formative and summative, must be integral components of each class taught under El Rabwa Network. Teachers should strive to hold all students to a high level of expectation and monitor progress through a variety of assessment strategies. These strategies should help cultivate a beneficial learning environment that emphasizes improvement as well as performance. Teachers are free to structure formative assessments to best match their teaching style and students’ needs. Summative assessments are given throughout each course to monitor cumulative progress. These assessments should be created to model final examinations appropriate to the level of course (College preparatory, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, IGCSE). Teachers should use feedback from all assessments to drive instruction and tutoring sessions.
Curriculum and instruction coordinators along with their Head of departments and teachers at El Rabwa Network put extensive time and effort into creating a variety of high-quality assessments because we believe that “high-quality assessments will lead to better information and decision making about students”. Professional Learning Communities provide a forum for teachers to meet regularly in order to insure that the assessments stimulate and encourage the desired teaching and thus lead to better information and decision making about students. El Rabwa Network also understands that “the quality of your assessments will follow from the depth of your understanding of what you teach”. The more you understand, the better the assessments”. Therefore, professional development is provided and professional learning communities work together regularly to enhance the depth of each teacher’s understanding and ability to communicate topic and facility student learning.
